The black cat, also called the "wild cat" or "sabot-cat", usually with an arched back and with claws and teeth bared, is closely associated with anarchism, especially with anarcho-syndicalism. It was designed by [a title="Ralph Chaplin" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Chaplin"]Ralph Chaplin[/a], who was a prominent figure in the [a title="Industrial Workers of the World" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Workers_of_the_World"]Industrial Workers of the World[/a] (IWW). As its stance suggests, the cat is meant to suggest [a class="mw-redirect" title="Wildcat strikes" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildcat_strikes"]wildcat strikes[/a] and radical unionism. The IWW (or the Wobblies) was an important [a class="mw-redirect" title="Industrial union" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_union"]industrial union[/a], and was the first American labor union to recruit and organize women and people of color, and played a critical role in the fight for the eight-hour work day and in [a class="mw-redirect" title="Free Speech" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_Speech"]Free Speech[/a] fights all over the country in the early 20th century. Their most famous and influential years were from 1905 until they were largely suppressed by the [a title="Palmer Raids" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palmer_Raids"]Palmer Raids[/a].

The origin of the black cat symbol is unclear, but according to one story it came from a IWW strike that was going badly. Several members had been beaten up and were put in a hospital. At that time a skinny, black cat walked into the striker's camp. The cat was fed by the striking workers and as the cat regained its health the strike took a turn for the better. Eventually the striking workers got some of their demands and they adopted the cat as their mascot.^{[a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchist_symbolism#cite_note-12"][13][/a]}

The name Black Cat has been used for numerous anarchist-affiliated collectives and cooperatives, including a well-known music venue in [a title="Austin, Texas" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin,_Texas"]Austin, Texas[/a] (which was closed following a [a title="July 6" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/July_6"]July 6[/a], [a title="2002" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002"]2002[/a] fire) and a now-defunct "collective kitchen" in the [a class="mw-redirect" title="University District, Seattle, Washington" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_District,_Seattle,_Washington"]University District[/a] of [a title="Seattle" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle"]Seattle[/a], [a title="Washington (state)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_%28state%29"]Washington[/a].

As a symbol, the [a title="Black cat" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_cat"]black cat[/a] has historically been associated with [a title="Witchcraft" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Witchcraft"]witchcraft[/a], ill [a title="Omen" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omen"]omens[/a], and death. It dates back to ancient [a title="Hebrews" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrews"]Hebrew[/a] and [a title="Babylonia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylonia"]Babylonian[/a] cultures. The witchcraft usage has persisted into modern times; anarchism shares the black cat symbol with witchcraft and [a title="Wicca" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicca"]Wicca[/a], though the latter two generally do not represent the [a title="Cat" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat"]cat[/a] with its back arched in a fighting stance.
